I saw this film at the SF Asian American Film Festival and saw it again this weekend. It was as good as I remembered it. Lots of good gags and jokes, especially in regards to the Chinese family. Some have commented that this film recycles Chinese family stereotypes. The reality is that some of what happens in the film is true among a good number of Chinese families. From the crazy grandmother, to the heavy expectations placed on the the son and the daughter in law to have a baby. It's a shame that poor promotion of the film from distributors or marketing team will likely kill the film. I heard it was marketed through chinese language papers but this film applies to more american born chinese who may not necessarily read or watch chinese media. Oh well - I've tried to get family and friends to out and support the film. If you're reading this, you should too! :)

First-time director Frank Lin has fashioned a great little comedy about the difficulties of relationships across cultural and racial boundaries. Yvonne, a Chinese divorcée pushing fifty with a young son pretending to be black, is a virtual household slave to her domineering, old-school mother who constantly demeans her for not being more successful with her life. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, not just her mother, but her entire family, declares her Mexican lover Jose a totally unacceptable match for a Chinese woman. ("Hosin? That means Monkey!"). American Fusion is a very funny film, well written and very well acted. WIth appearances such as Frank Morita and Fabio, this comedy is a definite must see for all audiences and is well deserved for more showings.

This is a delightful film that is genuine and more often than not dead on in portraying the challenging experience of creating and living in a 'fused' family. This is the best kind of comedy - the film not only has the audience laughing, but has them thinking as well. This film deserves much better promotion and wider distribution - so go see it!
